Or perhaps you wish to opt for more specific aircraft, maybe even helicopters or a classic, small, single-engine plane from the early years of aviation? Excellent article. I usually buy enhancements but this has brought some fine freeware to my attention. Cudos to those brilliant people who donate their hard work to the community. Dirt -- or the lack of it. Nearly all sim add-on programs are too clean, too pristine.

Have you ever seen an airport with ramps, taxiways or runways without dirt? Tire skid marks, spilled oil, accumulated carbon deposits from engine exhausts, etc. The list is endless. I flew professionally for 42 years in both the military and airlines and I never encountered a clean flight deck, tarmac, runway -- or roadway leading to a terminal.

If you want realism, the next time you're at an airport look around and analyze what you're seeing. It's everywhere. And it makes the big difference between reality and make-believe -- for me anyway. Thank you very much for the information.

I will try one by one and enjoy making my flight simulator as close as to the real world every step. This is the first problem I have ever had. The error is and says Library Not Registered Can you help?

Have only recently come across your website following Jack's TV tutorials and I can say that the quality and enhancement of the add-ons I have downloaded from your site are exceptional. Kai Tak is a Hong Kong airport and was closed in but is quite possibly one of the most famous airports because of its approach.

It is one of the most famous aircraft approaches both in-game and in real life so if you are trying to master the Kai Tak landing methods this is a good place to get the practice. With photo scenery used to include all of the extras you would want to see included, you can easily give yourself a life-like challenge to fully understand the entire area and make sure that your landings are going to be absolutely perfect!

This helps to improve the entire Iberian Peninsula with the exception of Portugal and creates a consistent and authentic scenery style throughout so you know just where you are flying above.

This is perfect for anybody within this region who wants to experience their homeland in the FSX world properly. Fitted with various textures for maximum exposure, this design is made up to improve highways and roads throughout the entire game. You can even choose unique textures from within the installation process to really make the game look exactly as you want it to. While the files I have selected for this edition are the top 20 in my opinion , there are thousands more available to download from our dedicated FSX scenery section.

Do I need some software to download complete package?? Will appreciate any response. Thank you G. I really appreciate your commentary and recommendations Ian.

Wish I was more knowledgeable about this simming stuff!! A photoreal scenery of the entire Netherlands including all of it's airports, even the very small scale glider ones? It's a must have. I have a microsoft flight simulatorX and also I installed the steam edition. I am having lots of trouble with stram and can't download microsoft on new laptop.

Have commercial rating. Thank you very much! Lukla was rated as one of the hardest places to land in the world - with a runway on a steep gradient and mountain ranges surrounding the airfield. I'd love to hear your comments below, please post! There are many ways to expand and enhance your version of Microsoft Flight Simulator X or as it's know within the industry, FSX , and by adding scenery enhancements is just one of them. These larger international airports are already included in the default FSX scenery , but developers have created more detailed, better resolution versions for you to download free of charge.

This isn't the extensive list of what's available within our download sections, but it gives you a good idea of what's available.

The best way to find what you're looking for is by using the search function below. Or, if you're simply browsing; you can find each add-on in seperate boxes below, with 25 downloads per page and making use the page navigation links to browse through each of the pages.

Most of the freeware add-on aircraft and scenery packages in our file library come with easy installation instructions which you can read above in the file description. Finally a good, FSX native scenery of my hometown. Some guys at blogfsx. Because this article is quite lengthy featuring 20 files , I have separated them up into subheadings that you can jump to using the links below: Scenery Enhancements Scenery Enhancements are a key part of expanding FSX, and it can make the world below you feel even more engrossing and enjoyable as you fly around.

FSX Enhanced Trees This unique scenery pack will totally re-design the trees within the game, using real photography as a basis for the designs. Airport Ground Texture Upgrade This excellent addition makes perfect sense for those who want to enjoy a more realistic world around them.

Water Effects Texture One thing that you will be sure of when you are flying in FSX is that you will spend a lot of time over water. Shuttle Launch Scenery This is a scenery add-on which has been included in the series as a whole new idea entirely.

Modified Terrain Textures This is an addition to your terrain. Airports As you can imagine, one of the most commonly downloaded and installed forms of an update for the FSX series is that of new airports.

Kennedy Airport JFK Airport is one of the most important pieces of American flight history and has been used millions of times ever since it first opened. Princess Juliana International Airport The Princess Juliana International Airport is located in the Netherlands Antilles and for many years has been the primary entrance and exit point for the nation.

LAX Los Angeles International Los Angeles is, without a doubt, one of the most populous and regularly visited cities in the entire world. Barbados International Grantley Adams International is one of the most popular airports in the region and is a complete remake of the original airport found within the game. San Diego International San Diego airport is extremely famous, and this total reworking of the area itself will give you something that looks far more like the real thing.

People should also know that there are upgradable VC Virtual Cockpit textures with extra in-game uses so that we can all build up our knowledge of the great world of flight simulators. I can now play FSX on my laptop with near full graphics. Believe it or not, lower settings with frame rate not set at unlimited makes the sim run terribly instead of better? Weird world we live in Also, check out FSpassengers, good fun flying real passengers and having an air hostess flirt with you mid-flight.

Just one question. I've heard two different views. Hope you can she'd some light on this. When unzipping both with WinRar it give many errors and seems some files are missing. Is it a problem with WinRar? Rimax - What errors are you getting - what do they say? Is it an error extracting the files or an error in FSX? Michael Braginsky - Thanks for letting me know that both work under Vista. I can confirm that both also work on Windows 7, however if somebody else can confirm that both work on Windows 8 that would be great.

Have to hand it to you Ian. I tried some of downloads from your best free ware for FSX a few months and they put me off freeware for life. Also didn't like your joystick article a few weeks ago. As I said before you should be incouraging those who are new to FSX to get a used or new Microsoft Sidewinder force feedback 2 rather than all that other crap.

The Goshawk looks like good and looks fun so I'll try that too. The rest look like they are almost certain to disappoint anyone used to payware 's, Q and the like. But they are free. We have downloaded Concorde from the free downloads, but then received this message - "Sorry, an error has occurred.

This application could not be installed because the air file is damaged. Try obtaining a new air file from the application author. Thanks Fred. David - Thank you for your comments regarding my previous article. I've really been selective with this article and tried my best to find freeware that really stands out from the rest. The iFly is a great package, I'm sure you'll like it. Yes, I read your comment on the joystick article - in fact I will update the article to include the Sidewinder as you mentioned, I'll pencil that in now!

Ian can you help me with this? I am a die hard fan of the Do you know if there is any cockpit for this file. Jon - I'm not sure the I listed above comes with a virtual cockpit I haven't tested for a VC myself as I never use them! The documentation doesn't mention anything about a VC.

However, there is a by Thomas Ruth that does include a VC. You can download Tomas Ruth's here. You mentioned that you never use a VC. Is there some other type of cockpit that you can use in FSX? The download from this article has no cockpit at all. Ian, Is it possible to install other aircraft to add to the default traffic on FSX? If so, how?? If I use WinRar I get a screen with an advertisment that several files can't be created.

I notice that many of these error are related to textures files. All this files are empty while all others, panel, sound, model, effects, etc.

Sometimes we spend money with addons that we verify later they barely worth it's value for money. Freeware sometimes surprises us with great quality addons.

As always, this article is a great job. Thank you, Ian. Hello, The Cessna Citation is a really cool free download. The sound is great and if you like small private jets, this one is fun to fly! David - I have now updated the joystick article and have included the Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 Joystick as suggested! Jon - I never use the 3D virtual cockpits; I find them a bit annoying. I always use a 2D panel type cockpit. Use the 2D panel from the Thomas Ruth in the comments I posted above.

In fact, you may use any panel you prefer with any aircraft - all you have to do is edit the config files. Let me know how you get on. Check out our misc section here - it has many AI expansion packs such as this one. You may also find the AI Traffic Editor download we have here also very useful. Let me know if this helps.

Sina - Thank you for confirming that! I'm thinking of upgrading to Windows 8 soon myself in my virtual machine. Manuel - Of course, that's the problem we always have with payware - especially the not so popular add-ons that have little or no reviews posted online.

Thank you for your kind words Manuel. I'm glad you liked it! Am i doing something wrong? So I believe there's no problem with the files. For the benefit of anyone contemplating an upgrade to Windows 8 - rest assured, FSX works just fine and smooth under Windows 8. No problems whatsoever. I've downloaded most of these packs and I am very impressed. I use this website a lot more than simviation.

After watching this i have improved my graphics and performance of FSX by a serious amount. I wished that Alejandro Lucena's Cessna Citation did not have that co pilot.

It is just an annoyance. I wished that there was a way to eliminate that co pilot. I have recently downloaded two of the free aircraft models from your list.

The Project Opensky and the Cirrus Neither seem to include virtual cockpits. The Cirrus download specifically mentions moving the content the gauges folder to the general gauges folder in FSX. There was no gauges folder included in the download. What am I missing?

Hi Ian Maybe I'm misreading your statement at the top but if you've configured your computer to dual-boot Windows 7 and Mac OSX I wonder if you have issues with partition sizes and file types. I did this with Windows 7 and Ubuntu on Monday and can be taxing on the physical memory at times. Seems to me that we're asking more out of the machine in terms of rendering and RAM if it's set up this way, have you found similar results? I can run every thing under windows 8.

Hello Ian, I was wondering about a kit plane a friend was considering.. The Glassair. Do you know if anyone has made a download for it? If they have, more than one offering? Is one better? Thanks so much. Most of these planes don't work or require editing to work if you know how.

Not worthy to be on this list Hi to all. I'm a Canadian and live in Kelowna, BC. We were one of the few places WestJet served when they first began operations with used B's. Love your site layout and will try the Hughes night stalkers since I actually flew the D for a few fun-filled years.

It is one nice machine to fly. Totally fingertip light as a feather controls. I can now accurately recreate everything except the paycheck! Have a nice day all. Sorry, he seems to be a hard-working simmer, but his visuals still have much to desire Why is the JustFlight not on here?

It out performs any of the aircraft on this list, in my opinion. It's almost like a free PMDG I downloaded the file "b I followed the installation guide but it never worked. It is a multi-texture file for FSX although I installed similar files before had no problem. I will be happy to have any advice on this.

Could you also organize something like this but especially for single or twin-engine propeller aircraft? The photo of the Douglas C Skytrain V3 Beta is even very parable for everyone who does this very top site. Yes, we will pen that in for a future article to come soon - featuring just propeller aircraft. Any particular models you're after? I tried two planes. No engine sound, no sound, when raising or lowering the flaps, pushing buttons In my country flight simulation is not - shall I say - very popular - so is hard to find stuff and the type of stuff you offer - congratulations.

Excellent work they do! I particularly continue using the FS9 that I find great. If possible, I would like you to include more about this simulator, thank you. I have spent many a happy hour going over most of the historic sites and retracing my late dad's steps whilst he was in the Royal Navy. Regards Nick. I have reviewed with great interest the files presented and I thank you infinitely for your work. Of these 20 files, I had already downloaded the C Skytrain V3 some time ago and I really love it; It is one of the planes that I like the most and especially this improved version, its sound, textures, cabin, everything.

Of the scenarios, I stayed with Santa Lucia Island, which is really impressive for its beauty and textures details. I do this in different planes according to distances. Fly Away Simulation suggests that most of the aircraft and scenery are P3D compatible when in fact they are not. Saint Lucia Island Scenery, grenedinesv2 are just two off the top of my head that has phantom objects in the parking areas and runways.

The Nemeth Bros. Simmers beware. I am 87 years old and just found Microsoft flight simulator I had the program years ago but 4 disk got damaged. I have been looking for years and now I am happy again.

I am having a little trouble with the Microsoft Sidewinder joystick. I would like to join your program and receive your letters bit money is very tight so maybe I will get lucky someday and join your club. Jim Mate.
