In the upper right part of the screen, you will see a small menu with a few options which you can use to select a tank, set new checkpoints, remove existing ones, and scroll the map. Using the map screen, you can select any tank and take control of it. Press Tab to switch to the next unit faster, although this is not so helpful when you have more than two teams.
You can have up to four teams of four tanks each, so the maximum number of your troops is sixteen. Take note that each tank can be set to auto or user control and that this setting remains when you switch to map view.
As soon as you press any command key while in action view, the auto control switches to user control. On the other hand, sometimes you'll want to leave it that way so units can move straight forward without shooting or simply standing still. Each team has one tank which serves as the leader and which follows the path to the checkpoint if its control is set to auto. Other tanks in the team under auto control will follow the leader.
So, if you want tanks in the same team to do different tasks, you will have to improvise with user control. Armored Fist is a very hard game.
First of all, leading multiple tanks in multiple teams is very demanding. You will often find yourself constantly changing control among several tanks in order to get the desired result. In most of the missions, checkpoints for each of your team are preset and enemy units are usually placed to meet you. You will have to delete the checkpoints and set new ones immediately after the mission starts, so your units can go a safer way. As for the enemy side, I downed SU25s and Hinds with modest effort.
In general, the AI did not seem to fully comprehend danger spots, smoke masking, and terrain cover. But, then again, they are AI. NovaLogic has kept their bold promise that the multiplayer experience "will be fun. A stronger emphasis has been placed on the multiplayer aspect than in NovaLogic's previous releases. In addition to the standard Co-op and Deathmatch play, Red on Blue Exercises split participants into two teams and give each player command of a tank platoon.
After testing the game on Kali, I found all three forms of gameplay quite addicting. The Red on Blue exercises became my preferred mode of play because I could compete against only one opponent, but with an entire platoon, air support, and artillery under command.
The result was usually a good connection, smooth gameplay and lots of action. I was disappointed to discover late during testing that the player scores were sometimes reported incorrectly during and upon finishing Deathmatch games. Initially, the game's overpowering fun kept my mind off the numbers. Later, the discrepancies haunted me.
If this problem is not addressed, it could impact the staying power of the game. Most sims inundate the player with specs on every vehicle and weapon in the game sometimes to make up for poor gameplay. While all the how-tos of game operation are included in the Armored Fist 2 manual, most sim enthusiasts are accustomed to having at least a summary of the equipment that they are fighting with and against.
That's the easy part. However, in the coming months, Armored Fist 2 will have some heavily clad competitors to beat. A solid, enjoyable game that projects a clear picture of tank warfare, Armored Fist 2 will no doubt be saluted by sim veterans and civilian gamers alike. Missions can be locked or unlocked. Locked missions appear in campaign mode to stop you editing them to your advantage; unlocked missions can be edited and used as a basis for your own missions.
You can even save your own missions as locked missions to stop you cheating. Theres a wide range of terrain. Once youve selected the map you want you have a free hand, placing vehicles, plotting waypoints and so on. You can place four types of trees, four types of strategic targets, artillery and air bases. You can also set friendly, enemy and rogue minefields, and dig trenches. The designer is well thought out, with a draggable floating tool-bar. Hours of fun for most people; weeks for the obsessive.
Your armoured death machine can be controlled by keyboard, mouse or joystick. I found the mouse best: its more than satisfactory for everything except aim-locking and firing, which were handled more quickly by hitting the keyboard. If you wanted, you could play the whole thing by mouse - I just found it a pain having to click on the icons in a hurry. A normal joystick simply didnt feel right, but the game is Thrustmaster WCS compatible for those of you who are well off and not ashamed to show it.
