Based on that, I'm assuming the letter part of the serial number simply indicated the country the mandolin was destined for when it left the factory DE being Germany where I got mine and UK being where Dave and, I assume, also Andy got theirs.

The numerical part seems to have no meaning at all, given that there are obviously countless repeats.
